How to replace a lost car title in Alabama

Alabama lets you skip the county office: file Form MVT 12-1 on the Department of Revenue’s Public Title Portal and pay the $15 state fee online. A county office can still file it for you, sometimes for more. Either way, the title is usually issued within 10 to 15 business days and comes by mail.

Step by step

  1. Find the VIN

You don’t need the lost title to find the 17-character VIN: it’s on the lower left of the windshield and on your registration card, and it may be on your insurance card.
  2. Check for a loan on the car

Still paying? Start with your lender: it fills in the application and gets the new title. Paid off the loan but the lien never came off? Get a lien release statement from the lender first. An electronic title can be printed on paper once, free; after that, a lost one needs this replacement.
  3. Fill in Form MVT 12-1

  4. Send it with the fee

    • Online: Through the Department of Revenue’s Public Title Portal, where the owner or the lienholder can upload the application and pay.
    • In person: At any designated agent, such as your county’s license plate office (the license commissioner, probate judge or tax collector, depending on the county).

Good to know in Alabama

  • To have the new title mailed to someone other than you or the lienholder, the owner has to sign and date the application.
  • In Clarke County, a lien recorded 4 or more years ago can be removed automatically on a vehicle 12 or more model years old.

FAQ

Replacing a title in Alabama: common questions

Can you get a duplicate car title the same day in Alabama?
No. The Alabama Department of Revenue doesn’t offer same-day title printing.
Can I get a title with just a bill of sale in Alabama?
Only for a car more than 35 model years old. Alabama doesn’t title those at all, and a bill of sale is accepted proof of ownership for registering them. A car 35 model years old or newer needs an Alabama title, so if the seller lost it, they have to apply for the replacement as the owner on record.

When the new title comes, keep a copy you can find

Add the new title to Granite. It reads the VIN, title number and lienholder and files the title with that car’s registration and insurance. Lose the paper again and those numbers are one search away. Your first 25 documents are free.
