How Granite works.

Four steps. You only do one of them. The other three are why the vault exists.

Step one

Drop.

Granite accepts whatever form the document already exists in. PDF for the obvious cases. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and HEIF for phone photos, including the Apple-only HEIC that most apps choke on. Plain text and Markdown for notes you already keep as files. Drag a whole folder in if that’s how you have things organized.

Re-dropping the same file never produces a duplicate. Granite recognizes it byte-for-byte at the upload edge.

On Granite Paid, you don’t even have to open the app. Forward any email to your private Granite address and the attachment, or the message itself, files itself. Or map a Dropbox folder to your vault: Granite imports what’s already there, then files every new arrival within a minute.

Step two

Read.

Granite classifies each document against a library of more than 110 document types we already know how to read. Then it pulls out the fields that matter (wages, dates, amounts, account numbers, expiration dates) and links each document to the people, vendors, vehicles, and tax years it concerns.

A one-paragraph summary in plain English sits on top of every document, so when you come back later, you remember without having to re-read the whole page.

What we already know how to read

More than 110 document types. Growing weekly.

Each document type teaches Granite which fields matter, which entities to link, and how to title it. Don’t see yours? We add a new type roughly once a week. Write us at hello@granite.co and we’ll prioritize it.

  • Taxes

    W-2, 1099-NEC, 1099-INT, 1040, K-1, property tax bill, mortgage interest.

  • Identity

Passport, driver’s license, Social Security card, birth certificate, visa.

  • Home

Lease, mortgage statement, home insurance, utility bills, HOA statement.

  • Vehicles

Title, registration, auto insurance, service records, loan payoff.

  • Medical

EOB, immunization record, prescription, lab result, insurance card.

  • Small business

LLC formation, operating agreement, EIN letter, invoices, vendor W-9.

  • Legal

Marriage certificate, divorce decree, power of attorney, will.

  • Education

Transcripts, diplomas, enrollment records, financial aid letters.

Step three

Ask.

In plain English. Granite runs hybrid search across keywords, semantic meaning, and the entities each document concerns, then reranks the top results so the right thing surfaces first. You don’t need to remember what you titled the file. You don’t need to remember if you titled it.

Ask a question and you get an answer pulled from the document, with a citation back to the page it came from. Clicking the citation opens that document at that exact page, so you can check the answer against the source yourself.

Real questions people ask Granite: “When does my passport expire?” “Find my 2019 closing disclosure.” “What did I pay for the roof repair?” “Show me all my 2023 tax documents.” You type them the way you’d say them out loud.

Step four

Filed.

Every document gets a permanent home, alongside the people, vendors, vehicles, and tax years it concerns. The library reads like a quiet bookshelf. Auto-collections form themselves around the natural groupings: a 2024 tax collection forms the moment you drop your W-2; a vehicle collection forms the moment you drop a title.

Manual collections are there too. Group anything you want, however you want.

And more

The vault keeps working, even when you’re not.

Drop / Read / Ask / Filed is the spine. The rest of the product is what makes the spine survive a long time: your archive, your account, your absence.

  • Platforms

    iPhone app

Granite is on iPhone. Scan a page with the camera, share a file in from Files or Mail, and read the whole vault on the phone. Face ID or Touch ID locks it. Same account, same vault as the web.

  • Move

    Move Mode

Moving? Granite reads your vault and builds a prioritized address-change checklist: every bank, insurer, and provider holding your old address, with account numbers and your local postal mail-forwarding link. Start one from any property in your vault, then check each place off as you go.

  • Share

    Vault sharing

Give someone access to a vault you own, with view-only or full edit access. They sign in with their own Granite account, so your documents never leave your vault. Pick view or edit, set an optional expiry, and revoke any time.

  • Continuity

    Emergency access

Name one person who can request your archive. They get an encrypted ZIP after you approve or after the wait window expires.

  • Continuity

    Inactivity heartbeat

Opt-in dead-man's switch. After 90 days of no logins (configurable), Granite emails you a “still here?” ping. No answer + a grace period later, your contact gets the grant.

  • Continuity

    Full archive export

One click downloads every document plus extracted fields, corrections, audit log, and a plaintext manifest. Envelope-encrypted, streamed through your key.

  • Trust

    Audit log

Every view, download, export, edit, and login on your vault. Filterable by kind, 12-month retention, append-only.

  • Trust

    Active sessions + MFA

See every device signed in, revoke any one. You can enroll an authenticator app (TOTP) from your settings today. Granite does not require that code at sign-in yet.

  • Account

    Cancel without losing anything

Your archive is preserved when you cancel, exportable any time, fully restored when you reactivate.

Yours, only yours

Encryption is the floor.

Every document is wrapped with its own AES-256-GCM key before it lands in storage. Titles, summaries, and extracted fields are encrypted again in the database. Granite staff don’t browse vaults; exports flow through your key. Read the full security model for the technical detail.
